‘Renao’

The Chinese sometimes seem impervious to noise, both in public and in their own homes and workplaces. You may find it difficult to hear/be heard over the phone, or even in person, because of people talking in raised voices, loud music, traffic noise, etc.

Parties and banquets are often not considered a complete success until the karoke machine, dance music, and various toasts are all happening at once. This is referred to as ‘renao,’ and is generally considered a good thing, so best raise your voice and join in the hubbub.
